Pending changes in air fare and other economic uncertainties, is estimated to be US $2500.00. This will include air fare from Dallas to Sao Paulo, hotel, basic meals, ground transportation and visa costs. Additional charges would occur for post-campaign excursion, incidentals (souvenirs, snacks) and cost of your flight to Dallas. The current exchange rate is US $100 = R $167 (as of 2/14/11). US $500 deposit will be due by March 15, 2011 unless prior arrangements are made.

Itu, Brazil is situated in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, about 60 miles from Sao Paulo, the second largest city in the world. Itu has a population of ~150,000 people. About 12 miles from Itu is the “suburb” of Cidade Nova with a population of ~50-60,000. Cidade Nova has no hospital, just a local government clinic. The language spoken is Brazilian Portuguese, although many can understand some small amount of English.

services provided

Basic medical and dental care will be provided by physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, chiropractors, dentists and their hygienists, and athletic trainers. Elementary pharmaceutical services are provided. Some laboratory blood testing will be available with results sent to patients. EKG and basic ultrasonography should be available as well. Translation services are provided by local volunteers. Limited surgical procedures uner local anesthesia are possible.

volunteers needed

There is a need for non-medically trained volunteers, as well as skilled practitioners. Among the practicioners needed are gynecologists, cardiologists, pediatricians, internists/family practitioners, dentists, dental hygienists, medical students, chiropractors, physical therapists/athletic trainers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, licensed vocational nurses and registered nurses, counselors (family, psychological, spiritual), and pharmacists. Space is available on a first come basis, as needs in each of the areas is variable.

important traveling information

Brazil requires a visitor visa for entry. This cannot be applied for until 90 days prior to arrival and must include evidence of round trip airfare. Visa granted will be for either 3 months or 5 years at their discretion. Further information on the application process will be communicated as the time arrives to proceed. Visa cost is generally about US $200, included in the total cost listed above. Visa application will be the responsibility of each applicant, but assistance will be provided.
